Next time, I'll just cut down the trees'

A COUPLE of years back, Peter Mitchell approached Murrindindi Shire Council, requesting permission to create a firebreak around his home, set on eight hectares of bush in Kinglake.

He was told the council had regulations that prevented residents chopping down trees with trunks greater than a certain diameter.

"I said, 'That's ridiculous, I'm in a fire-prone situation, there is all bush around me and I need to clear a bit more,' " Mr Mitchell said.

"They said, 'You can put in an application for a permit, but you won't get it.' "

On Saturday Mr Mitchell's Deviation Road home, where he had lived for 15 years, burned to the ground.

When he bought the block, he said, it was just bushland, but covenants had subsequently been put on it, including an environmental overlay.

While he understood the need to conserve native vegetation, people had to be able to defend their homes, he said.

"I've still got thousands of trees. I'm doing my bit for the environment, I'm keeping it as a bush block."

He has vowed to rebuild on the site, but this time he won't even be applying for a permit. "I'm just going to cut down the trees and push the perimeter back a bit more. If I build on the same place, I have to feel I am going to be able to defend it and not play Russian roulette."

Don't ever forget who the Nats are - Opinion: views on the news on Stuff.co.nz

You know I have in the past quite liked Trotter
he has always seemed to me to be an even handed kind of lefty ,one you can read and at times feeling he is one of the few Lefty's that might have the ability to see the rights another point of view may be valid

I guess I was wrong, he has today proved himself to be just another Left wing journo hack with a inbreed hate of anything or anyone who is successful either a Farmer or business person

Don't ever forget who the Nats are - Opinion: views on the news on Stuff.co.nz: "THE COCKIES: Backbone of the nation; earners of our overseas funds; selfish; insular; and possessed of an indefatigable sense of moral superiority over everyone whose front door looks out upon a street instead of a paddock.

These are the people who, heedless of the enormous biosecurity implications, illegally released the rabbit-killing calicivirus into New Zealand - and then laughed at the efforts of the authorities to hunt down the perpetrators."

Define Irony

The movie Con Air had a great description of irony

well this is even better, the loony lefts head long rush to champion bio fuels is the biggest mistake they could have made

On the bio fuel bandwagon - 20 Jul 2008 - NZ Herald: Science News from New Zealand and around the World: "The scale of the effect is still being grasped. An Oxfam report last month argued the biofuel boom has dragged 30 million people into poverty, based on evidence that biofuels accounted for up to 30 per cent of the global rise in food prices. Two weeks later, a leaked World Bank report put that estimate up to 75 per cent, and 100 million people pushed below the poverty line.

Insiders suggest the report wasn't officially released because the figures so dramatically contradict White House claims that plant-derived fuels contribute to less than 3 per cent of food-price rises.

The amount of grain it takes to fill a 4WD tank with ethanol could feed a person for a year.

Biofuels aren't even green - some are adding to global warming.

It's been dubbed the 'great green con'. Although plants absorb carbon, major biofuel crops such as palm oil and corn have been shown to release more carbon in their cultivation than the emissions saved by their use in vehicles. Many palm oil plantations in south-east Asia are based on converted rainforests and peatland, and studies have shown the greenhouse gases released by the clearing of these natural carbon stores far outweigh biofuel carbon savings.

PM says Key weakest link -

PM says Key weakest link

I always thought Labour made a serious tactical error in getting brash kicked out as National leader
they Won the battle but will soon lose the war

Key is a very smart ruthless man who demands perfection from his fellow MPs and Staff

he may stumble over a few words now and then (who dosen't) but he has labour on the ropes and shows no sign of letting them off

Sparc Waste

Sparc are a total waste of space

2008 Darwin awards.

You've been waiting for them with bated breath, so without further ado here are the 2008 Darwin awards.

Eighth Place

In Detroit , a 41-year-old man got stuck and drowned in two feet of water after squeezing head first through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve his car keys..

Seven t h Place

A 49-year-old San Francisco stockbroker, who 'totally zoned when he ran,' accidentally, jogged off a 100-foot high cliff on his daily run.

Sixth Place

While at the beach, Daniel Jones, 21, dug an 8 foot hole for protection from the wind and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom! When it t collapsed, burying him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beac h used their hands and shovels trying to get him out but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him. Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Fifth Place

Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed as he fell through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor.

Fourth Place

Sylvester Briddell, Jr., 26, was killed as he won a bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger.

Third Place

After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather & Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up! and fired a few wild shots from a target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, and several customers also drew their guns and fired. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt.

HONOURABLE MENTION
Paul Stiller, 47, and his wife Bonnie were bored just driving around at 2 A.M. so they lit a quarter stick of dynamite to toss out the window to see what would happen. Apparently they failed to notice the window was closed.

RUNNER UP

Kerry Bingham had been drinking with several friends when one of them said they knew a person who had bungee-jumped from a local bridge in the middle of traffic. The conversation grew more heated and at least 10 men trooped along the walkway of the bridge at 4:30 AM. Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge they discovered that no one had brought a bungee rope. Bingham, who had continued drinking, volunteered and pointed out that a coil of lineman's cable, lay near by. They secured one end around Bingham's leg and then tied the other ! ;to the bridge. His fall lasted 40 feet before the cable tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. Bingham's foot was never located.

AND THE WINNER IS...

Zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt ( Paderborn , Germany ) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief.
Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded. The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked Mr. Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves... 'Shit happens'
